Bicentennial Charles Gounod Saint-Rémy de Provence

In Saint-Rémy de Provence a little more than elsewhere, we celebrate in 2018 the bicentenary of the birth of the musician Charles Gounod, born in Paris on June 17, 1818 and died in Saint-Cloud on October 18, 1893. Past by Saint-Rémy de Provence, this composer who is at the origin of the revival of French music gave his name to our hotel as well as to a village street.

As part of this bicentennial, on June 15, a tribute was paid to Charles Gounod during a special piano bar evening in our 3-star establishment in Saint-Rémy de Provence. Éric Venezia has performed an anthology of Gounod's works with a mastery and elegance that has enchanted our gardens. To celebrate the bicentenary of his birth, many concerts are held in France throughout 2018 and Charles Gounod was honored during a special week on the radio France Musique. His work entitled The Bloody Nun was performed at the National Theater of the Opera Comique and received praise from the critics and the public who considered it "musically exciting", "fantastic". A real triumph in sum, as the set of events related to this bicentenary.

As a reminder, it is in Saint-Rémy de Provence, at the foot of the Alpilles which majestically dominates the Mediterranean Sea, that in 1863 the composer Charles Gounod found his inspiration to create Mireille, an opera based on Frédéric Mistral's great poem in French Provencal: Mirèio. Following the meeting of the two men in Saint-Rémy de Provence, the composer invited by the felibre settled in the Auberge de Ville-Verte, which will be called Hotel Gounod many years later.

Charles Gounod thus stayed in this hotel that will bear his name and had a piano delivered to compose his score. Mireille, epic race of two lovers under the burning sun of Provence of yesteryear, will be translated into fifteen languages, a sign of a great critical and popular success.

The bicentenary of the birth of Charles Gounod, illustrious author of the opera Faust after Goethe and Romeo and Juliet after Shakespeare, is the perfect opportunity to stay in our charming hotel in Saint-Remy de Provence in order to discover or rediscover his musical heritage.
